Death Is Nothing At All

by Henry Scott-Holland

“Death is nothing at all.Β It does not count.Β I have only slipped away into the next room. Nothing has happened.

Everything remains exactly as it was.Β I am I, and you are you, and the old life that we lived so fondly together is untouched, unchanged. Whatever we were to each other, that we are still.

Call me by the old familiar name.Β Speak of me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference into your tone.Β Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow.

Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes that we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me.Β Let my name be ever the household word that it always was.Β Let it be spoken without an effort, without the ghost of a shadow upon it.

Life means all that it ever meant.Β It is the same as it ever was.Β There is absolute and unbroken continuity. What is this death but a negligible accident?

Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just round the corner.

All is well.Β Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost.Β One brief moment and all will be as it was before.

How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again!”

With all our love, now and forever Your loving family

Dear Jace, my namesake, I am deeply saddened and shocked by your passing. I very much looked forward to your company and your enthusiasm for sharing the knowledge that you had recently acquired. For me, you have always been kind, supportive, respectfully, and really interesting. If it were not for the demons that relentlessly pursued you, you would have done amazing things. You have outrun them now; I hope you have found peace. I wish for your spirit to find its way back to us, to guide us with your boundless knowledge and hunger for learning. Rest well, my friend.

God, give me grace to accept with serenity the things that cannot be changed, Courage to change the things which should be changed, and the Wisdom to distinguish the one from the other.Living one day at a time, Enjoying one moment at a time, Accepting hardship as a pathway to peace, Taking, as Jesus did, This sinful world as it is, Not as I would have it, Trusting that You will make all things right, If I surrender to Your will, So that I may be reasonably happy in this life, And supremely happy with You forever in the next.Amen.
